Dick Hunt (Richard Edwin Hunt IV, Esq.) is an esteemed tenor who has graced many stages around the world with his velvety vocals, and whose first words to any director in a new production is “I’m happy to do this scene shirtless if the art calls for it”. Washed up on the Spree shores of Berlin after a misbegotten Seebühne accident, Dick is here to stick himself into the scene, woo the audience, and prove that the best Barihunk is a Baritenor.
Marysa Abbas is a genderfluid Berlin-based interdisciplinary artist who performs as a drag king and operatic soprano. Their work has brought them to stages ranging from the Staatsoper unter den Linden to legendary Berlin queer bars. Their work on the operatic stage has included productions with the Minnesota Opera, including the world premiere of Paul Moravec’s The Shining, as well as premiering roles in Rossa Crean’s operas Lost Daughters and The Great God Pan. They were a performer and collaborator in the first work of the operatic song cycle Die Kronung der Schöpfung from Berlin’s Fuck Marry Kill Productions. As a chorister, they performed in 21 productions with Berlin’s Staatsoper unter den Linden in their 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons.
As a queer artist and producer, Marysa has done stagings of Dominick Argento’s From the Diary of Virginia Woolf, lead the Chicago branch of the monthly operatic concert series Opera on Tap, and founded the operatic drag trio The Three Drag Tenors. As their drag king alter-ego Dick Hunt, Marysa was a member of the Berlin drag king collective the Venus Boys, performing in the immersive art installation This is not Wonderland at Wilde Renate, appearing in fellow collective member Dornika’s short film Dream Dwellers and participating multiple times as a performer as well as a teacher for König, a workshop series that fosters support for emerging drag kings in Berlin.
Their artistic ethos can be found through The Three Drag Tenors: reminding audiences of the centuries-old operatic tradition of gender-bending, while grounding their theatrical comedy in the language of contemporary drag kings.
